The single-story brick building that housed Phoenix Public Market Café, a downtown Phoenix staple, could meet the wrecking ball, which a preservation group says would chip away at the area’s character.
The popular restaurant and bar closed in 2020. The property owner, Kurt Schneider, sold it a year later to Central Fillmore Dev 1, LLC, which recently submitted an application to demolish three buildings on Pierce Street between Central Avenue and First Street.
The city puts a 30-day hold on some demolitions to explore alternatives to razing buildings 50 years or older, according to the Phoenix Historic Preservation Office. Officials ultimately found the three buildings were not historically significant enough to stop demolition.
