Residents push for rec center rebuild in Sun City

By Rusty Bradshaw | Your Valley

Recreation Centers of Sun City residents urged the corporation’s board to move forward with its plans to rebuild Mountain View Center, 9749 N. 107th Ave.

The project, estimated at more than $40 million for the total rebuild, ran into an obstacle when the board in January approved a 90-day moratorium on signing any contracts connected with it.

During that time, several residents spoke against continuing the project or in favor of scaling it down, claiming the plans eliminate a popular activity, the cost is too high or it did not include recommendations by the ad hoc committee that studied it and other concerns.

Most notable of the objections was construction of a gymnasium on the property.

“Putting a gym next to a theater is just insane,” said Kristi Svendsen. “The Orpheum is not built next to the Suns arena.”
