For 2 Maricopa County attorney candidates, ‘who won in 2020?’ is a trick question

Opinion: Two of the four candidates running for Maricopa County attorney can’t answer a simple question. That’s not only stunning, it should be disqualifying.

It’s a fairly simple question, one that anyone who wants to be the next Maricopa County attorney should be – make that, must be – able to answer.

Yet only two of the four candidates could apparently answer it.

That’s not only stunning. It ought to be disqualifying.

CBS 5/3TV’s Dennis Welch queried the candidates on Monday, after they filed their nominating signatures to get on the ballot in the coming special election to replace Allister Adel, who resigned last month amid questions about her sobriety and lack of leadership.

Welch: Who won the 2020 presidential election?

To no one’s surprise, Democrat Jullie Gunnigle had no trouble answering it.

Two of the three Republicans, however, could not bring themselves to say that Joe Biden won the election, Welch reported.

‘Who won the 2020 election’ is not a trick question

Republican Anni Foster serves as general counsel to Gov. Doug Ducey, who certified Joe Biden’s election victory in Arizona. Yet when Welch posed the question to Foster – several times, in fact – she declined to answer it.

“I think it’s been resolved as to who the president is,” she told Welch.

Republican Gina Godbehere, a longtime deputy county attorney who now works as Goodyear’s city prosecutor, deflected twice when asked directly whether Joe Biden legitimately won the election.

“I have not seen anything right now to show that he’s not the president,” she told Welch. “I could tell you that there are a lotta questions that need to be answered. I would like to know some more answers, too.”

Only Republican Rachel Mitchell, a career prosecutor and one of the five chief deputies who urged Adel to resign, would answer the question.

“Mr. Biden got the most votes in Maricopa County,” Mitchell said. “Based on everything we know,  there’s been no finding that Arizona state law was violated by anybody within Maricopa County. Mr. Biden won.”
