The City of Phoenix is giving a developer an extra 11 months to start construction of a new hotel in downtown Phoenix and will meanwhile use the vacant site for Super Bowl LVII events in February.
The Phoenix City Council approved an extension on the construction start date for 3DC Partners LLC to develop a new hotel at Central Avenue and Adams Street.
The city owns the property. The council approved the latest extension April 20.
Under the revised deal, 3DC has until April 2023 to start construction of a “new mixed-use tower consisting of a boutique hotel with approximately 220 hotel rooms including 20 hospitality suites, approximately 50,000 gross-square-feet of commercial office space and ground floor retail,” according to council documents.
The city entered into a development agreement in 2019 for the hotel project at the southeast corner of Central and Adams.
3DC Partners (Darryl Berger Jr.) is an arm of New Orleans hotel development firm the Berger Company.
The construction extension will allow the city to use the downtown property, which has long-served as a parking lot, for Super Bowl events.
The developer will hold off on starting construction until after the big NFL game.
The city has approved previous extensions to the construction start date with the latest previous one set for June 3.
