How Cullum Homes grew another industry over the last decade

(SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.)— Cullum Homes has been building award winning homes since 1985 in the finest neighborhoods of Paradise Valley and Scottsdale.

Led by Rod and Kim Cullum, alongside daughter Lindsay Cullum-Colwell and son-in-law, Paul Colwell, the Scottsdale-based builder is well known for being Arizona’s leader when it comes to high-end and innovative building but now the Valley’s award-winning builder is also expanding its vastly growing renovations division.

With repeat homeowners utilizing Cullum’s services multiple times over their lifetime, it is no wonder why their Renovations Division has recently experienced unprecedented growth.

What started for Cullum Homes in the wake of the housing crisis in 2009 as a modest half million in renovations revenue has grown into $12 million in renovations business. Cullum’s Renovations division follows the same stringent building model it has since the mid 1980’s, utilizing their strong name, brand and reputation as a company that will deliver incredible quality for both new builds and full-service renovations.

Heading up the renovations division is Derrick Willett, who serves as the Vice President of Renovations. Willett is joined by a 12-person team including two project managers, a field renovations manager, as well as field managers and field assistants. His excitement over this expanding department in the midst of a perfect mix of factors was palpable.

“While COVID-19 was obviously so difficult for so many of us in numerous ways, it did offer non-traditional opportunities to spend more time at home amongst family and loved ones,” Willett said. “Cullum Home owners were pleased with their homes but now wanted luxury offices to work in comfort. Families better understood the frailties of life and wanted to build casitas and guest suites for elderly family members so they could be closer to them and in the midst of hardship, people saw opportunities to come together, and they trusted Cullum Homes to help bring those ideas to life.”

So why Cullum Homes for these renovations? The Scottsdale-based family business successfully banked on the happiness of the people who went with them to build their home, giving them a large, pleased native market for renovations. But it goes much further than that; Cullum Homes is built well for such an endeavor. Between infrastructure and communications systems, trade relationships and volume, Cullum has the size and scale to succeed and thrive in this area.

Moreover, they use a proprietary construction management system which handles trade scheduling, internal and external communications, and provides them with immediate notifications. A majority of their tradespeople work only for Cullum, meaning that they are happy with that relationship and understand the needs of both the company and the homeowner. What does this mean for the homeowner? It means a seamless process with effective communications, met expectations, and minimal cost overruns. In short, it means a very happy client.

All of this has been a focus of Rod and Kim Cullum, who started their business in 1985 with that very ethos in mind. Strong relationships, a relentless focus on quality, and flexibility have been the hallmarks that have contributed to the company’s success and has allowed them to thrive in the Renovations industry.
