As the Jan. 6 committee continues to lay out its findings to the public about what happened last year, a recording of U.S. Rep. Paul Gosar emerged in which he said, “I was the one who started the revolution.”
Gosar tied himself to the insurrection at a June event hosted by a Republican club in Bullhead City, according to a video obtained by The Arizona Republic.
“On January 6th, 2021, I was the one who started the revolution in regards to accountability of elections,” the Arizona Republican said to some applause.
The comment was made after statements about the health insurance industry at the 1:35 mark of the approximately 2½ minute clip.
Gosar has fervently denied the 2020 presidential election results. He claims that former President Donald Trump lost because of widespread voter fraud, a notion that has never been proven.
Gosar’s office did not respond Thursday to a request for comment.
Gosar’s role in the run-up to the unprecedented attack on the Capitol has been under scrutiny since it happened.
Ali Alexander, who led the “Stop the Steal” effort to overturn the 2020 election results, in a now-deleted video referred to Gosar as “spirit animal” of the movement.
Alexander later testified he and Gosar had “a few phone conversations,” according to federal court documents.
