Until officials around the country closed schools to avoid the spread of COVID-19 in March 2020, Shiry Sapir said she had not thought much about running for office. But the school closures and debate over mask mandates built an anger in the Scottsdale-based real estate broker and investor.
“That kind of ignited something in me, to try and fix this for a lot of other families who didn’t have a choice,” said Sapir, who moved her children to private school after their public school closed during the pandemic.
“I never thought I would run for political office, but I think we see a lot of our mama bears around the nation running for school boards.”
