Florence candidates discuss growing pains, zoning codes

FLORENCE — With the recent controversy surrounding a new Public Works complex planned in a historic residential area, Town Council candidates were asked if the town should have to follow its own zoning codes.

“Leading by example has always worked for me,” Jose “Mo” Maldonado said, but the cost-effectiveness must also be considered. “You need water, you need wells, you need wastewater to be treated.” The town’s decision to remove the trash bins or “eco station” was great, “but we just have to look at the dollars and cents,” he said at a candidate forum July 13 at the Anthem Parkside Community Center.
Cassandra Scherm said, “We have to follow the laws that are in place, but we have to make sure the right facilities are there. … I would support it as long as the requirements are met and the needs of the citizens are met.”
