The Tempe City Council will be briefed at its meeting Thursday afternoon on adaptive streets and a series of proposed and planned pedestrian and streetscape improvements.
The council will hear about progress about the creation and implementation of an Adaptive Streets Design Implementation Guide that would provide Tempe a roadmap and toolkit to approach innovative and creative streets, sidewalks and crosswalks.
That includes temporary improvements and installations for special events or during certain times of the year.
Those include new approaches and procedures for temporary street closures for special events as well as painted crosswalks, curbs and sidewalks to freshen areas of downtown Tempe.
Street murals, shade structures and parklets to allow restaurants and coffee shops to use sidewalks and parking lanes.
Some of those could be more temporary while others could be more permanent. Parklets were implemented by various communities across the country to allow for more outdoor dining during the social distancing rules of the coronavirus pandemic.
The guide and other Tempe efforts hope to streamline and outline the process and types of street and pedestrian improvements as well as art, shade and other installations that can be put in place in the downtown area.
