Scottsdale council to vote on garbage truck crash settlement

By Mike Sunnucks | Rose Law Group Reporter

The Scottsdale City Council is scheduled to vote Sept. 13 on a $225,000 settlement related to a municipal garbage truck rear-ending a car in 2020.

The accident occurred in May 2020 near East McDonald Road and the Loop 101 freeway.

Leslie Buntin and Janinne Carpenter sued the city after the accident claiming injuries, medical bills, lost wages and other costs from the crash. The plaintiffs also claimed they were not able to work.

They originally sought $4 million to settle the suit and filed a lawsuit in Maricopa County Superior Court.

That led to a formal mediation hearing on Aug. 16.

The parties agreed to the proposed $225,000 settlement
“resolving the entirety of the lawsuit.”

The city council will consider approving the settlement at its Sept. 13 meeting. City staff also favor the settlement.
