Gilbert will be home to a new battery storage system that Salt River Project will tap into during peak demand periods.
Tempe-based SRP announced it has signed contracts with Plus Power to bring online two-grid charged battery storage systems – one in Gilbert, which will be called Superstition, and the other in Avondale, dubbed Sierra Estrella.
The total capacity of the systems will generate enough power to handle 76,000 homes for four hours, according to SRP.
“These early deployments will help both SRP and the industry gain experience with this technology, which will play a major role in reducing carbon emissions,” Kelly Barr, SRP’s chief strategy executive, said.
