Developers are taking their first steps in building out vacant land in southeast Mesa after the city’s planning and zoning board unanimously approved a rezoning request in an effort to inject life into a struggling city-backed ballpark.
Three hotels and 7,600 square feet of retail and restaurant use are planned at the nearly 11-acre site at Ellsworth and Williams Field roads. Before the City Council can rezone the land, it will first need to be annexed into Mesa. That vote could likely happen in the spring, according to a city spokesperson.
Mesa BA Land LLC purchased the land from Pacific Proving LLC in April, county records show.
The Legacy Gateway Hotels is the first phase of a larger 195-acre project, according to city documents. Andrew Cohn, a representative for the property owner, said the larger project will be a mixed-use development that will have residential, retail, entertainment and employment opportunities. It’s envisioned to be a “town center” for the area, according to city documents.
