Rep. Ruben Gallego is reportedly set to announce his long-anticipated run for the U.S. Senate in 2024 in a move that makes it clear Democrats intend to fight to win back the seat held by former Democrat Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, who is now an independent.
Newsweek reported Friday that Gallego, D-Ariz., plans to release a video in English and Spanish rolling out his candidacy.
A campaign spokesperson for Gallego declined to comment.
The outspoken and nationally visible retired Marine would become the first prominent candidate to enter a race that could turn into a historic, three-way contest that will help determine control of the Senate after the 2024 elections.
Sinema, who left the Democrats in December, has filed paperwork to mount a run of her own but hasn’t formally said she will do so.
Sinema declined to comment. In a Friday interview on Phoenix radio station KTAR, she said she intends to focus on the work of the Senate, such as border and immigration matters and water security.
