$4 million was just a slice of an $85 million settlement Brnovich reached last year with search giant Google.

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes has accused her predecessor Mark Brnovich of “an appearance of impropriety” in how Brnovich handled $4 million in settlement money last year.

Mayes, in a March 13 letter obtained by The Arizona Republic, raised concerns about how the former attorney general sought to distribute the money.

The letter alleges Brnovich skirted the Legislature, which has the duty to appropriate funds, and intended to give the money to two organizations with which he and his allies have ties.

Mayes said she would not give the money to those organizations in Virginia and California, however.

“I will ensure the opportunity to apply for these funds is advertised in Arizona, because I believe that settlement funds intended to redress wrongs experienced by Arizonans should be spent in Arizona,” Mayes wrote.

The $4 million was just a slice of an $85 million settlement Brnovich reached last year with search giant Google.
