MARICOPA — The city council approved hosting a special election this November to get voters’ permission to sell some of its most valuable pieces of land.
City Manager Rick Horst said the city has lacked an attractive environment for investment for “quite some time,” especially with industrial development. They’ve started changing that by purchasing land. Even though they purchased land, they need to work through some barriers with options to sell them.
State law requires voter approval to sell any piece of land valued at more than $1.5 million. Horst said the city has repeatedly tried to get that law changed in the Legislature, but that proposal has never even made it to a vote on the floor.
