Phoenix City Councilmember Laura Pastor has bowed out of the race for Congress. She made the announcement today in a statement, which reads as followed:
“I have had so many wonderful opportunities to serve the people of our community, who remind me every day just how resourceful and resilient Arizonans really are. I am so grateful for the daily opportunity to live out my family’s mission of leadership.
Since I announced my candidacy for Congress a few short months ago, so many people have shown up for me, and for the causes we support. Every minute in this race has been an exciting new adventure, and I am grateful for every volunteer, every donor, and every word of encouragement.
However: lately, I have developed some health concerns – not life-threatening, just enough for me to take stock and prioritize my well-being. With that in mind, I have decided to suspend my campaign for Congress in 2024.
While the timing may not be right for a Congressional run, I know it is always the right time to prioritize my health, therefore prioritizing my family’s health.
I am, of course, full steam ahead on my next 4 years on the Phoenix City Council. The people have entrusted me with a duty, and with them I mind I intend to do it, with the same principled leadership.
I will continue the fight for housing for displaced families, education for all students regardless of status, sustainable solutions that prevent further damage from the current climate crisis, accessible healthcare, and nurturing the next generation of public servants. This new chapter in my life story begins, and our work is far from finished.
