Pinal County Supervisor Kevin Cavanaugh, R-Coolidge, has filed a statement of interest to run for sheriff next year.
“I am presently the most experienced and most qualified candidate in the race for sheriff,” he said by email in response to a request for comment.
“When running for county supervisor I promised that I would not ignore corruption, and will keep that promise as sheriff,” he continued. “I will identify and build up leaders within the sheriff’s office who can continue a legacy of excellence.”
Cavanaugh was a police officer and detective in Indiana, has held other jobs in investigations and law enforcement, and has run his own businesses. He briefly ran for sheriff in 2016 before throwing his support behind eventual winner Mark Lamb. He then held an administrative role in Lamb’s office before returning to politics.
“My experience in law enforcement, internal affairs, criminal and civil law combined with education, having bachelor’s degrees in accounting and public affairs, will serve the county well,” Cavanaugh said. “Citizens expect their elected officials to fight for them, to fight for what is right, and I have done so and have the scars to prove it.”
