It’s very difficult to drive around Chandler’s Galveston neighborhood without running into a construction project. One of the city’s oldest neighborhoods is getting a giant makeover, one that is costing at least $62 million.
First, the nonprofit Live Love started work on The Oasis, a new $2 million a community center and playground on Erie Street. The nonprofit began building during the summer before it had all the funding needed.
Soon after that work began, Chandler Unified School District started its $35 million plan to rebuild Galveston Elementary School. The new school, which can house over 700 students, is going up while students are sitting in classrooms built 60 years ago.
