Phoenix City Council unanimously approved zoning changes allowing a large expansion of Mayo Clinic’s Phoenix campus. The planned biotechnology campus will aim to research, create and use the next generation of health care technologies and methods.
The hospital plans to add 240 acres of its Discovery Oasis campus around the hospital that will include clinical practice, research, education and advanced manufacturing facilities.
“In the years ahead, when people think of where is health care innovation coming from, I expect that all eyes will turn to Phoenix and to Discovery Oasis and be impressed with what we planned here today,” Dr. Richard Gray, CEO of Mayo Clinic Arizona, told council before their vote.
Dr. Stephen Lester, medical director for the Discovery Oasis project, said in a news release he hopes the campus helps produce the next generation of health care products, services and solutions.
The campus will be a partnership with local bioscience businesses and universities. Phoenix is one of the fastest growing bioscience markets in the county. The city ranked first in the nation in both job growth in 2021, first in graduate growth in 2023 and ranked top five in emerging life science markets in the U.S. in 2020.
