On Nov. 8, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne held a news conference to decry a Desert Mountain High School club as “antisemitic.”
Scottsdale Unified School District Superintendent Scott Menzel – who was not present at the news conference – addressed the matter at the Nov. 14 SUSD Governing Board meeting.
Horne said “a large number of students … attended a lunchtime presentation sponsored by UNICEF and Amnesty International – which is profoundly antisemitic.”
He called for high school leaders around the state to forbid those two groups from their campuses.
That will not happen at SUSD, based on Menzel’s statement.
SUSD, he said, “operates under a limited open forum with respect to student clubs – and that means that we cannot and will not discriminate based on viewpoint, whether it’s political or religious students voluntarily associate based on their interests.”
