HOBBS GETS A FAVORABLE OPINION FROM THE AG: Hobbs’ is entitled to appoint three members to Clean Elections while Yee can appoint two, according to an opinion from Mayes. All five commissioners’ terms have passed their expiration date, leaving five positions, with no more than two members from the same party, to be filled before Feb. 5. Arizona law requires “the governor and the highest-ranking official holding a statewide office who is not a member of the same political party as the governor shall alternate filling such vacancies.” But because of the holdover, there was confusion over who would name the lone Independent. Yee, a Republican, claimed she was entitled to name three of the five commissioners, given the last appointments were made by Hobbs during her time as Senate Minority Leader. …more
