Scottsdale Councilwoman Betty Janik will not seek re-election

Scottsdale Councilwoman Betty Janik is not seeking re-election this November.

Late afternoon yesterday, Councilwoman Janik alerted her fellow members of Scottsdale City Council and municipal Charter officers she will not be seeking another term as an elected leader.

“I will not be running for a second term on Scottsdale City Council. Time waits for no one,” she said in her Jan. 2 memo to City Council and Charter officers.

“At this stage in my life, I want to spend more time with family and friends. I also believe it is time for the older baby boomers, such as myself, to yield governance to younger people. Future development, sustainability, and homelessness in Scottsdale are but a few of our daunting challenges. The energy and creativity of younger people will be an asset in solving these societal issues.”

Councilwoman Janik says with her remaining year at City Hall, 3939 N. Drinkwater Blvd., she will have a succinct focus on all maters before the local governing board.

“With one more year to go, I will continue to diligently study each issue that comes before council,” she said. “I will continue to listen to the collective wisdom of our citizens, all of them, in making decisions. I will continue to build consensus and find compromise. I will continue to work from the middle.”

An excerpt of her biography at City Hall includes:

Upon arrival in Arizona, she volunteered for over six years at the Arizona Science Center, developing classes in Life Sciences and received three awards for her service. Additionally, she has served on various HOA boards in Chicago, Denver, and Scottsdale.

She is the past Treasurer of Protect Our Preserve which ushered in the successful passage of Proposition 420, past President of the Board of the Coalition for Greater Scottsdale and served on the steering committee “For the Best Scottsdale”, advocating for the successful capital bond proposals supporting significant projects in Scottsdale.
