As ‘starter home’ bill advances, Maricopa mayor voices opposition

By Pinal Central

MARICOPA — As Maricopa’s population grows, so do housing issues. Following its passage through the Arizona House of Representatives, a new bill called the “Arizona Starter Home Act” threatens local control in the city, Mayor Nancy Smith said.

In summary, House Bill 2570 would prohibit cities from requiring homeowners to enter a homeowners association. In addition, the bill would stop cities with populations of 70,000 or higher from controlling the lot sizes of single-family homes.

That makes it very relevant for the city of Maricopa, which is quickly approaching that 70,000-resident threshold. City leaders are keeping a close eye on how the bill fares in the Senate.
