Cave Creek will begin construction on a new Phoenix water interconnect project in April after receiving a $2 million federal grant from a recent infrastructure bill.
The project will create a new potable water supply line to Cave Creek that is more reliable than the current single-pipeline system and is set to be completed by spring of 2026.
Currently, around 4,400 people use water in Cave Creek and the Desert Hills area. All of that water comes from the Colorado River through the Central Arizona Project via a single 12.5 mile-long pipeline.
Relying on one pipeline and one treatment plant makes maintenance work in Cave Creek very risky. Any kind of outage becomes an emergency situation that could leave thousands without water. According to Cave Creek Water Utility Director Shawn Kreuzwiesner, working on the pipeline feels like “Flying an airplane and trying to work on the engine at the same time.” The town typically experiences one outage every year.
