Silk Stocking neighborhood nears historic designation

(City of Chandler)

It is taking a very long time for Chandler’s Silk Stocking neighborhood to be recognized as a historic district, but residents are close to the finish line.

“I’m just very happy that you and I are both alive to see it,” Mary Lou Perkins told Dorothy Rouff. The two women started the effort to officially recognize the neighborhood about 20 years ago.

“You’re…” Perkins said.

“87,” Rouff said.

“And I’m 91,” Perkins said. “I’m glad we’re both here today.”

Chandler Planning and Zoning Commission voted unanimously Feb. 21 to recommend that City Council establish a Historic Preservation District within the Silk Stocking neighborhood.

If Council agrees, it will be the fourth historic designation it has granted since getting approval to become a Certified Local Government with the State Historic Preservation Office.
