Peoria City Council will consider April 16 allowing for the development of a new battery energy storage system on 22-acres at Old Carefree Highway, about 2 miles west of Lake Pleasant Parkway.
A BESS provides reduncancy for the power system. It receives electrical energy from the power grid and stores it in batteries until needed by the grid. Then the energy is released back into the power grid as needed.
Officials say the project will benefit the community by providing local capacity for electrical system reliability and flexibility.
The facility will consist of about 1,500 battery enclosures, 84 inverter/transformers, an interior high-voltage substation, an operations and maintenance yard, access roads, and an interconnect line leading from the internal substation of the BESS to an APS substation already located immediately adjacent to the proposed battery storage site, documents say.
