The report looked at cities with a population larger than 50,000 and found Maricopa saw a 7.1% increase in residents, with a population of 71,022 as of July 1, 2023.
These numbers are part of an annual estimate the census bureau releases, while the official census is conducted every 10 years, most recently in 2020. As the annual federal estimates are released to reflect the change from the previous year, projections are traditionally behind the true population figure.
Local estimates are commonly higher as they account for the rate of growth from the previous year as well as the addition of new housing over the course of the current year.
