Phoenix Mayor Gallego says City reviewing DOJ report to improve policing, training

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego joined Good Morning Arizona on Tuesday to speak about the recent US Department of Justice investigation into the Phoenix Police Department.

Mayor Gallego’s interview on Arizona’s Family at 8 a.m. was her first public comments on the investigation since the results were announced last week.

The DOJ’s three-year investigation found that Phoenix PD violated people’s rights, discriminated against certain groups and used excessive force, including “unjustified deadly force.”

Mayor Gallego said the City is in the process of reviewing the entire report and identifying changes that need to be made.

“The report was very difficult to read,” she said. “It’s a very emotional topic and very important to so many people in our community. We’re taking it very seriously. There’s some information in there that will help us become a better, safer city. We want to learn from any corner where we can to police this community effectively.”
