Homeowners work to prevent Tempe golf course from being redeveloped

TEMPE, AZ (AZFamily) — The Shalimar Golf Course, off Southern Avenue and McClintock Drive in Tempe, has been around since 1961 and holds a special place in the hearts of neighbors.

“Everybody has a story to tell, or a moment they shared,” said Anne L’Ecuyer. “People got married here. People celebrated anniversaries here, so that matters to the community.”

The close connection neighbors have to the golf course is one of the reasons they don’t want to lose it.

Arizona’s Family has learned that the current owners of Shalimar have entered into a purchase-sale agreement with developers. They want to replace the golf course with 277 homes and townhomes.

It’s a proposal that’s not going over well with residents, concerned about traffic and congestion.
