Scottsdale mayor election heads to runoff

With nearly all ballots tabulated by Maricopa County in Scottsdale’s July 30 primary election, the race for Scottsdale mayor will be a runoff between Lisa Borowsky and David Ortega, according to a recent press release sent out by the City of Scottsdale. Additionally, two council seats remain open to be decided at the Nov. 5 general election.

In the Scottsdale primary election, nine residents ran for three seats on the city council. To be elected outright in the primary, a Scottsdale City Council candidate must receive a majority of all the legal votes cast in the election for that candidate’s race. The press release broke down how that is calculated.

According to the City Charter, the majority of legal votes cast for city council is determined by:

*Dividing the total number of legal votes cast in each candidate’s race by the number of seats to be filled (three, in this case).
