Gilbert eyes tower plaza opening

Gilbert officials hope to open a renovated Water Tower Plaza by the end of the year.

During a joint meeting last month organized by the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce with the town Office of Economic Development, the Redevelopment Commission and the Parks and Recreation Department team, officials shared an update on the project and took attendees on a behind-the-scenes site tour of the site.

The redevelopment of the area at the base of Gilbert’s historic water tower began in January and has reached its halfway point, according to the town.

The completed project will include a shaded and water-efficient splash pad, new restroom facilities, an event lawn, a recirculated water wall and a shaded picnic grove. The plaza will also have integrated seating and landscaping and lighting improvements.

A section of the new seat wall has been completed. Lights will be installed underneath the edge, “creating a beautiful, illuminated space,” the town notes on its website.

The new water wall is designed to be a focal point in the plaza.
