In a packed chamber on Sept. 17, the Peoria City Council approved general plan amendments that officials say will help comprehensively master plan two northern areas of the city and help to facilitate a hub of advanced industries there.
The vote required a supermajority, needing support of at least five of the seven council members, and it accomplished that with one dissenter, Mesquite District Councilmember Brad Shafer, who represents the area where the amendments will take place, and where residents who oppose the amendments live.
As directed by Mayor Jason Beck and council, the city is looking to position itself as a future hub of employment. To do this, the city is seeking to master plan about 8,300 acres of Arizona state land in north Peoria — two areas known as North Peoria Gateway, adjacent to Vistancia’s commercial core, and Peoria Innovation Core, spanning from Pleasant Valley north to State Route 74.
