Phoenix is expanding trade with Mexico

The city of Phoenix is doing more trade with Mexico. City officials attribute that, at least in part, to lessons learned from the pandemic.

A Phoenix subcommittee this week advanced to increase funding and extend the length of the contract with Phoenix’s trade office in Hermosillo, Mexico, which has begun to operate not just in Hermosillo but across Mexico.

“As most of us know, COVID-19 really taught us a lesson to constraints in the supply chains and logistical issues,” Juan Batres, a Phoenix economic development program manager told Economic Development and Housing Subcommittee during its Wednesday meeting.

Many U.S. ports went through bottlenecks of goods trying to get through, Batres said. The effects of those supply chain issues had extensive and long-lasting impacts on the economy, including scarcity of some goods and inflation.
