Gilbert is the safest municipality in Arizona and ranks 31st for safety among 182 municipalities nationwide, according to a new survey.
In Arizona, Scottsdale (ranked 39th place nationally) placed second and Chandler came in third (46th place nationally) in the survey by the financial website wallethub.com, which based the ranking on 41 datasets divided among three categories – home and community safety, natural disaster risk and financial safety.
Of the Arizona municipalities it studied, fourth-ranked Peoria came in 69th nationally, followed by Mesa, 85th; Tempe, 92nd; Glendale, 120; Tucson, 146th; and Phoenix, 149th.
By far, home and community data ranging from traffic fatalities to fatal drug overdoses to homelessness comprised the largest set of indicators used to rank the cities.
Other factors in that category – which accounted for 60% of each municipality’s rank – included hate crimes, the perception of safety, crimes like rape, murder and assaults; police, paramedics and firefighters per capita and even the presence of terrorist attacks.
