President-elect Donald Trump campaigned hard on border security and claimed it would be his top priority once he took office.
At his rallies in Arizona, he vowed to carry out the largest mass deportation of undocumented immigrants ever.
It raised questions on how his return to office could impact the state. Immigration attorneys and the National Border Patrol Council have differing opinions.
Still, the vice president of the largest union for U.S. Border Patrol agents said Wednesday there is a lot of misinformation.
“Some of the individuals have received the wrong messaging,” Art Del Cueto said. “Illegal is not a race. CBP has reported that they have arrested individuals from 168 different countries.”
Del Cueto said he believes individuals from other countries who have circumvented our laws should have consequences.
Rose Law Group Immigration Attorney Darius Amiri said these policies instill community fear.
“It‘s concerning,” Amiri said. “We’re in a border state where we probably do have a lot of undocumented persons or relatives, friends and family of undocumented immigrants who legitimately should be worried about this.”
Amiri suggested that undocumented immigrants work quickly to get some sort of protection, whether it’s applying for a green card or DACA.
