After deliberations from the Planning and Zoning Commission, the Flagstaff City Council reached a unanimous decision to support an ordinance that rezoned a portion of land on Lake Mary Road for high-density housing.
The piece of land is 13.96 acres at 4631 S. Lake Mary Road. It would hold about 202 residential units, with 162 being sold at market rate and 40 sold with the label of Category 1 affordability. The layout would include apartment complexes with multifamily and townhome styles. About half of the buildings would be three stories high.
Additions to the Flagstaff Urban Trails System (FUTS) and the extension of the Mountain Line bus stops were included in the council’s decision.
A public hearing took place before the council’s discussion, with 24 people both in person and on Zoom who presented their thoughts on the development. Out of that group, 19 were opposed to the rezoning and five people were in support. Most were in agreement that they did not want to have housing in the proposed area.
“Not every development is a great one and deserves to be built,” said Mary Norton, vice chair of the Planning and Zoning Commission. “Just because we have a housing crisis doesn’t mean we welcome everything regardless of what it entails and brings along with it.”
