Central Arizona College leaders hope a new performing arts building becomes a “diamond in the desert” for Pinal County after a decision to level the damaged Pence Center.
Jackie Elliott, president and CEO, said at a board meeting Tuesday that staff had a meeting with the state insurance trust before winter break and it was decided not to rebuild the Pence Center. It’ll eventually be torn down and a new building will be created to accommodate Pinal County’s growth, which is much needed within the community.
The current building on the Signal Peak Campus is about 50 years old and it served its purpose, she said. Water on the roof caused it to collapse in October 2023, and the structure and insurance situation were evaluated in a long process. Meanwhile, major events have been moved to other venues.
