Phoenix expands housing model to help homeless

Phoenix is expanding its new “XWing” housing model to help seniors out of homelessness.

Maricopa County and the city are funding $6.75 million for the Phoenix-based sustainable housing company Steel + Spark to build more of its innovative housing units out of shipping containers.

The Senior Bridge campus, at 2853 E. Van Buren Street just a couple blocks north of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, expects to provide 40 one-bed, one-bath units of transitional housing and 65 affordable apartments for low-income seniors — age 55 or older — at or below 30% of the area median income.

“They’re doing some really creative and innovative things with affordable housing,” said Bill Morlan, chair of the board of directors for Central Arizona Shelter Services, about Spark + Steel.
