City of Glendale Regular Council Meeting 1/14/2025 | Council to vote on ordinance making illegal camping | If enacted, the ordinance would make it illegal to camp on private or public land not owned by an individual. This ordinance is in response to the 2024 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that enforcement of generally applicable laws regulating camping on public property does not constitute “cruel and unusual punishment” prohibited by the Eighth Amendment. This ordinance will add definitions for “camping” and “camping paraphernalia.” There will be no criminal penalty for those camping when there are not alternative accommodations such as shelter beds available. Illegal camping when alternative accommodations are available is punishable as a class 3 misdemeanor under the ordinance. |
