The Scottsdale City Council avoided a possible crisis during its Jan. 14 meeting by unanimously voting to appoint assistant city manager Greg Caton to the acting city manager position after Bill Murphy unexpectedly retired earlier in the day.
Murphy, who has served the city for 32 years, did not return calls from the Daily Independent for this story.
Councilmember Solange Whitehead believes Murphy retired because Councilmember Jan Dubauskas requested at the last minute an item be added to the agenda to “consider the appointment, salary and effective date of an interim city manager until such time a new city manager is appointed and begins employment.”
At least four council members agreed to put the item on the agenda at the last minute.
