MARICOPA — Tired of waiting for other agencies to fund it, the city of Maricopa is proposing a half-cent sales tax hike to contribute toward the widening of State Route 347 outside its city limits.
This proposal comes as the Arizona Department of Transportation has announced the final design and anticipated construction schedule for a new overpass at the intersection of SR 347 and Riggs Road. That plan, however, continues to show SR 347 at two lanes, which is a leading cause of traffic headaches for those traveling between Maricopa and the Valley.
“With rapid growth and increasing traffic, the need for widening the 347 has never been more pressing,” the city said in a press release Wednesday. “Today, City Council members are proposing a potential solution that could fast-track progress on this critical project.”
