Paradise Valley town councilors say two bills going through the Arizona Legislature could have a negative effect on the town’s unique character, going as far as “gutting” some of its zoning ordinances.
Town officials have been keeping a close watch on House Bill 2371 and Senate Bill 1229, which address putting limits on how municipalities can regulate the design and development of homes with the hope of producing more affordable housing.
Mayor Mark Stanton said in an email to residents the bills exempt municipalities with a population under 70,000 for only a portion of the bill, however other sections remain applicable to all municipalities, including Paradise Valley.
In the email, he said there is “a pre-emption of local ability to control our zoning and housing regulation.”
