FLORENCE — The Pinal County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Wednesday to cancel the county’s pending zoning code update in the face of overwhelming public opposition to how it would limit residents’ rights to keep livestock on small land parcels.
The meeting began with approximately 30 people speaking for more than an hour against the update. Approximately 25 people protested last week.
“We’ve made ourselves look like asses,” Supervisor Mike Goodman, R-San Tan Valley, told his fellow supervisors. “The five of us have got to spend time to help straighten out this mess. … We’ve got a lot of hell and (expletive) that we’ve got to deal with here, and get calmed down.”
He proposed that each supervisor set up a focus group in his district and asked the public to “stay engaged to make this better than what it is.”
Board Chairman Steve Miller, R-Casa Grande, told attendees Wednesday that Pinal will try again someday to update its zoning code. Until Wednesday, county officials and staff were planning on the first comprehensive revision since 2012. Miller said interested people should consult the current code to learn how they might already be in violation.
Jordan Rose, founder and president of Rose Law Group, weighed in on the matter, telling RLGR: “The Pinal Board of Supervisors made a great decision to reset immediately upon hearing what was in the document.”
