Chevron and the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality say a soil excavation project on Sunland Gin road between Casa Grande and Eloy is not hazardous, after being prompted by a concerned prospective property developer — though an official cleanup plan has not yet been finalized years after the agreement.
The prospective property developer, Robby Richards, who operates Richards Development and R2 Construction, raised concern about the project, calling it a “hazardous waste dump” in communications with PinalCentral and Casa Grande City Attorney Brett Wallace.
The project, initiated by Chevron and under oversight by the ADEQ, is not that but only includes a “small amount of low-level pesticide,” according to a statement from Chevron. Richards is still skeptical.
