PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Arizona faces a housing crisis with a major shortage of affordable homes. House Bill 2191, which is making its way through the Legislature, would allow some religious institutions to build housing on their land.
However, people in a North Phoenix neighborhood are trying to stop the bill from moving forward.
Maritza Tafur lives next to a Catholic Church on 40th Street near Shea Boulevard. She said the church has been trying to build housing on its empty lot of land for years.
Neighbors said they reached a compromise with the developers for low-density housing, which they support, but fear that could change if HB2191 at the State Capitol were to pass.
