Florence council frowns on mixed-use housing development

Just over 13 acres of what could be high-density multifamily housing near the Windmill Winery was more than the Town Council could support, and members unanimously voted to deny a rezoning request.

“I personally don’t like leaving a PUD (planned unit development) open to be decided some years down the road,” Councilmember Tony Bencina said. Councilmember Nicole Buccellato agreed, “I don’t ever want to go into something blindly. … I can’t imagine 12 units on one acre, very saturated. I don’t feel that it fits the area, either.”

Mayor Keith Eaton encouraged the developer to return with a better proposal. “There is hope, do not go away. Bring back what you’ve heard tonight and we look forward to seeing you again,” Eaton said.
