A former Super 8 motel in central Phoenix will be repurposed into transitional affordable housing for seniors exiting homelessness.

It joins a similar affordable housing project for seniors right next door, which opened earlier this year at the site of the former Phoenix Inn.

Phoenix City Council voted 8-0 last week to hire a construction company for the remodel of the city-owned property northwest of Interstate 17 and Northern Avenue.

“I could not be more excited,” said Councilmember Betty Guardado about the project.

The project will provide 126 units for seniors 55 and older who are “exiting homelessness,” a city document states. The document did not mention any income level requirements, but Guardado mentioned the project was for seniors “with very low incomes.”
