Sophistication does not come cheap: Scottsdale Water will be asking City Council for nearly $100 million to keep its recycled water system moving ahead.
The water department’s goal is to have filtered, treated wastewater flowing back to Scottsdale homes as drinking-quality water in the next few years.
The water campus, an innocuous site on the north side of the Loop 101 and Hayden Road, was the first facility in Arizona – third in the nation – to get the stamp of approval for “advanced water purification.”
That program is better known for its three-word moniker: “toilets to taps.”
While the 27-year-old water campus is in the midst of a $30 million upgrade, the city’s recycled water program is going to need another $50 million to stay up to speed with state regulations.
