It’s almost time to light up a cigar in Surprise.
The Surprise Planning and Zoning Commission on May 15 approved a conditional-use permit with site plan for the Fox Cigar Bar near the AMC Surprise Pointe movie theater.
The nearly 4,600-square-foot smoking lounge will be located in an existing building on the southeast corner of Litchfield and Waddell roads.
Owner Mitchell Fox plans to add a 1,200-square-foot patio to the east portion of the bar to allow for outdoor smoking after the Surprise City Council approved its use last fall.
Planning commissioners unanimously voted to approve the permit and site plan, but Chair Jared Holland acknowledged the health risks of smoking.
“I want to avoid the thought that by recommending this that we are recommending smoking or in favor of it,” Holland said before the commission took the vote. “This will be a place where individuals who enjoy smoking and engaging in that will have the opportunity to do so freely.”
