The Dragon Bravo Fire has burned more than 105,000 acres along the Grand Canyon’s North Rim, according to the Watch Duty fire reporting service.
This means the fire is officially considered a “megafire,” since the flames have destroyed over 100,000 acres.
Officials say the fire is just [now 9%] contained. Experts say it’s now the 10th-largest wildfire in Arizona’s history, roughly 14,000 acres behind the ninth-largest.
The latest incident report shows more than 1,000 firefighters are working to contain the flames.
Nearly a week ago, around 26% of the fire was contained. Even though that number has dropped to 4%, crews say they are not losing containment. They clarify that the fire is growing in size, making that percentage much smaller.
The wildfire began on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon after being sparked by lightning on July 4. Federal officials chose to let it burn, similar to a prescribed burn. The move prompted Governor Katie Hobbs, among other Arizona elected leaders, to call for an investigation.
